Snowman! Well, not quite yet.

The two year old assistant gardener first noted the new white carpet outside this morning. Her perspective was definitely more positive than the comments from most of the adult prairie folk who are watching snow fall today. I was reminded by the assistant gardener that we must keep a carrot and hat on hand at all times for the accessorizing of snowmen. Noted.

This snowfall finally took the petals off my corn poppies (Papaver rhoeas), which had actually still been looking rather colorful and showy. Oh well. It is October and we're in northern Saskatchewan.

At least the onset of winter makes gardening a non-option for the upcoming months. No need to feel guilty for not accomplishing anything out there now! I was thinking of it like losing your job and hearing this message: "We're sorry, you did a good job this past summer and all, but...we have to let you go. We've moved production to Mexico. We couldn't keep going in the current local conditions. You can clear out your pots and say goodbye." Here's to the excitement of houseplants for the next seven months. Gosh, don't you love Canada?

You are living the Canadian Dream. Or maybe dare I call it a bad dream. This is early right?

I keep waking up and thinking I need to do garden cleanup, and yes I will get around to it in October, but then I realize it is not September, it is October.

Alberta got snow also. If this is Canada, wake me up please.

Ha! Yes, this is not out of the usual, just like snow in May. Actually, the snow has been accumulating since yesterday morning, as it is STILL snowing. The snowman may not be far off.

Snow so soon.......wow!
Sometimes it, and freezing weather creep up on us like two years ago when I didn't get my rain barrel emptied. It froze and cracked down the seam on the back.
I don't know if I'd want to live and garden in a warm climate 12 months of the year - I like the break.

I fully expect Mother Nature will tire of her little joke and bring us a few more balmy days as recompense. (fingers crossed!)

My little two-year-old assistant declared that there were 'white bubbles" outside :)

Funny that we can go from 30° to -12° all within 14 days. You're right--that's Canada. Just 2 weeks ago I was wishing for time to get my painting and renovations done. Now I'm wishing I could get the last bit of the yardwork done. Never satisfied. Happy Thanksgiving.
